Rally for Fun
Weeks before the Fall Foliage Rally the long range weather forecast was very good. One week before the Rally the forecast predicted a major storm to create havoc on Long Island. Many people were expressing concern. The day before the Rally the weather report was for cloudy skies with occasional rain. The real rain was not to start until after 2 P.M. and the wind later. I took precautions. I shortened the rally route and planned to start the cars earlier so the lunch would be done by 2 P.M. Twenty two teams started the rally with more joining us for lunch. I told everyone that fall colors are more vibrant on a cloudy day and they believed me! The route explored many secret vistas and traversed one lane roads in Oyster Bay and Huntington. Many decided that they would repeat the rally on a clear, sunny day to experience all the beauty. If anyone else would like a copy of the route instructions simply email a request to me and I will it them to you. Lunch at the Huntington Yacht Club did not disappoint anyone. Many medals were presented in addition to one, golden Porsche Apple!
The 62nd Snowflake Rally, reported to be the oldest continuously run event in PCA, is scheduled for January 28, 2018. Snowflake will be a TSD (time speed distance) rally. What is that you ask? Simply, like any other rally you are given turn by turn instructions directing you from a starting point to a finish point. Unlike Gimmick Rallies which ask you to answer questions as you drive on the Snowflake you are given speeds to travel. We know when you are supposed to be at any point along the route. The more accurate you are at maintaining the speeds the better you will do when we time you at unannounced places.
Want to learn more? Join me for a Rally School on January 10 at club headquarters. This school will explain how to participate in the Snowflake Rally with confidence as you have fun, enjoying the drive.
